Back in March of this year, we enjoyed a popular talk by Sue Potter, an amateur nature and wildlife photographer, as part of the Friends of Foots Cray Meadows (FFCM) Speaker Series events.
Over time, Sue has discovered an affinity and connection with mute swans and began recording, through her photographs, their life stories, learning so much about them and the difficulties they face surviving in our modern world.
In her FFCM presentation, Sue told the story of the Foots Cray Meadows swan family, which had experienced a dramatic year in 2025 including the tragic death of one of the adult swans and the disappearance of a cygnet from the lake by Five Arches Bridge. However, it was also a tale of strength, love and endurance that came to light through her photographs.
The talk was followed by a short film about the swan family, set to music, filmed by Sue's husband, Kevin, a videographer.
Kevin has kindly agreed for us to share the video here on our website, which can be viewed below. Our thanks to Sue and Kevin.
The Friends of Foots Cray Meadows would also like to thank the Greenwich Wildlife Network and South Essex Wildlife Hospital, both of which have been crucial to the survival of our swan family in recent years. Those organisations can be contacted for help if visitors to the meadows see wildlife harmed or in danger.
